Many people start their own business, in part, because they want the freedom from working for someone else, and the ability to do things their own way. However, after a period of time, even your own business can begin to feel like a job. That’s when it’s time to bring back the excitement you first felt when you started your business. When this happens, it’s time to spice your work life up with some creativity.
Take a Look at the Boring
Likely one of the reasons you’re feeling a little stale is that you’re tasked with doing things that you no longer enjoy doing. If that’s the case, determine why you dislike these tasks and what you can do to either change the way you’re doing things, or delegate these to someone else. For example, if you’re finding that taking care of paperwork or keeping the books is keeping you locked in your office for too many hours of the day, you need to either change the schedule or find someone else who can take over those tasks. Maybe, you could schedule just a few hours a week to focus on these tasks so that you can free your mind from them for the rest of the week.
Change Up the Space
Maybe you just need a change in work environment. Make a change in your office, like moving the furniture, adding some art or listening to some music. Work from home or a coffee shop for a few hours a week to get a change of scenery.
Get Back to the Basics
Remind yourself of why you started your business in the first place. Likely, you chose the exact type of business you did because you possess an area of expertise or a passion for something about your business. You may have grown stale because you’ve had to focus on the details of the business, rather than the thing about the business you loved in the beginning. For example, if you are a designer who opened your own design studio, you may be finding that as your business has grown, you personally spend less time designing spaces and more time running the business. If this is the case, find ways to get back to doing what you love.
There are so many benefits to being your own boss. However, no matter how much you love running a business, there will be times when you will need to make a change to remind yourself of the passion that truly fuels you.
